The Joseph Rowntree Theatre Management

The Joseph Rowntree Theatre is a company limited by guarantee governed by its Memorandum and Articles of Association dated 12 March 2003. We became a registered charity with the Charity Commission for England and Wales from 2 July 2003

The objectives of the Charity are:

  1. The provision of an affordable facility for the use of the community of the City of York and its surrounds for the presentation of the dramatic arts both as performers and as an audience.
  2. To provide an important meeting and social venue for the community
  3. The advancement of education in the performing arts in the City of York

Officers and Appointed Directors of the Joseph Rowntree Theatre Limited are Trustees of the Joseph Rowntree Theatre Charity.

The Management Board of the Joseph Rowntree Theatre Limited consists of the following posts:-

Additionally there are 3 board members, these roles are designed either as a training ground where experience and understanding of the running of the business can be obtained while a director position becomes vacant, or for retiring directors who find they have less time to commit to the business than that required for a director role.

The members of the board are appointed by the directors for a period of three years, with one position subject to re-election each year. Members attend all regular Board meetings and have the same voting rights as trustees at these meetings

Applications to join the board as a trustee are governed by the theatre Recruitment Policy (dated June 2005) Where ever practicable, trustees are recommended for any vacant director positions within the Company. The three Trustee roles are either a training ground where experience and understanding of the running of the business can be obtained while a director position becomes vacant, or for retiring directors who find they have less time to commit to the business that that required for a director role.
